Luxury Cruise Etiquette: What to Know Before You Sail
Published: December 2024
Modern luxury cruising isn't your grandmother's cruise—but there are still unwritten rules worth knowing.
Dress codes demystified: Most luxury lines have elegant casual (nice trousers and collared shirts), and formal nights (cocktail dresses, suits). Pack accordingly, but don't stress excessively. When in doubt, slightly overdressed beats underdressed.
Tipping on luxury cruises: Many luxury lines include gratuities, but it's worth confirming. If you receive exceptional service from specific crew members, a discretionary tip in a thank-you note is always appreciated.
Dining flexibility: Make reservations for specialty restaurants as soon as you board—they fill quickly. But also embrace spontaneity. Some of my favorite cruise meals have been last-minute decisions.
Shore excursions—book or explore independently? Ship excursions guarantee you won't miss departure, but independent exploration offers more flexibility and often better experiences. I always arrange private guides in key ports for my clients—best of both worlds.
The unspoken rules: Don't save loungers you're not using. Do respect quiet zones. Don't monopolize crew members' time. Do learn their names and say thank you.
Luxury cruising is one of the most relaxing ways to see multiple destinations. Once you understand how it works, you'll wonder why you didn't sail sooner.
